Rivers: Yakima, Klickitat and Methow Rivers

The Yakima, Methow and Klickitat rivers are all in great shape and fishing well right now.

The fishing on the Yakima continues to be good with the little bugs under an indicator. Use a poly indicator and don’t go to deep. We have been seeing a consistent hatch of BWO around 1:45 in the farmlands and lower canyon. There are still some October Caddis around! Flies to have in your fly box this time of year are Size 18, 20 Copper and Red Brassies, Size 18, 20, WD 50’s and some Non Beaded Pheasant Tails size 18 and size 20’s. Focus your fishing to the walking speed water that is 2ft to 4ft deep, between 11am to 3pm.

The Klickitat had a little push of water last week that brought in some new fish. The catching has gotten even better. We are catching steelhead on the Nymph and and the Swing. The Klickitat Closes November 30th there is still time to catch some fish.

The Methow has been fishing very well. It’s also been a Swinging and Nymphing game pick your method and have some fun. This time of year on the Methow can be very productive swinging the fly.

The last few days on the Yakima River has been fun fall fishing. The fish have been keyed in on the small nymph game right now (size 18 and 20′s). It’s a good idea to run a yarn indicators, they detect the small movement on the flies better than thingamabobbers. I know its not fun casting yarn indicators but your hook up ratio will improve. For the dry fly anglers, we have been seeing some nice trout working in selective spots. They have been giving us a good challenge.

Where do you start with Ted Truglio, a man that cares more about people than he will ever let anyone know, a guy that will truly give you the shirt off his back. When you are on a guide trip with Ted, you will know you’re in the presence of a great guide. He understands how water moves. He knows fish like a fish, very few people have that 6th sense. There is no filter while you’re in the boat with Ted! All topics are fare game! You will hear his opinion and if you disagree with him by the end of the day you will agree with him. He has a very competitive side, you know its go time when he fires it up but when he doesn’t feel it you will be BS’ing drinking beer in the shade. You will truly enjoy the entire day fishing with Ted. – Johnny Boitano

“WARNING” a day on the water with Ted Truglio might make you feel like you did a thousand crunch’s (every topic is fair game, including Ted). Laughing and learning go hand in hand, and in Ted’s boat you will do both. Ted is involved with many intricate parts of the Troutwater Fly Shop team: guiding, managing both fly shops, co-owner and somehow a family man. A day on the water with Ted is more than just another fishing trip, its an experience of a lifetime. – Scott Wilson

Rivers: Yakima River, Klickitat River

Sorry for such a long delay in the fishing reports. The Yakima is low and clear. We have been spending most of our time from the Farmlands to the Upper River. The fishing has been pretty dang good. When fishing big dries, fish the heaver seams and don’t be afraid to twitch the fly a little. If you enjoy fishing small dries fish that walking speed water the (Montana seams). Nymphing has been the most productive using small patterns. If you haven’t been out fishing this Fall, get out. The weather has been outstanding, lets hope this warm weather continues.

It’s  also that time of year we start chasing Steelhead. If you have wanted to catch a Steelhead or learn how to throw a Spey rod, come spend a day with us Steelhead fishing. The Klickitat is in great shape and there are fish! We have a few dates left, give us a call and we will set you up.

No More Hoot Owl Restriction on the Yakima River

Great fishing on the Yakima River despite the recent bump in flows from Kachess and Keechelus reservoir. The fish have had an absolute Buffet line as far as bugs, including aquatic worms, cranefly larva and October caddis casings to name a few. In the last couple days there has been no need for 5x tippet which is nice to bring the fish in quick and get them safely released. The small bug game is just around the corner. With a cooler weather system causing water temps to go down the Hoot owl has been lifted.  Water is on the hard drop and is going to be low fall flows in the next week.

The Yakima River has still been great in the early am. The nocturnal stones (tanish or cream colored) are still the best early ticket, while in some zones the fly needs to be dead drifted (faster water) other zones it needs to be twitched (slower water). When the sun is out, hoppers have been the best, and for the bigger picky trout, a lower profile hopper has been better than a big winged pattern. Start looking for the October caddis nymphs to migrate as well. A good dropper choice could be a big prince or peacock whatever, we caught a fish the other day that had mouth full of October caddis rock casings.

Ps- the majority of big fish have moved off the bank during the day, so don’t be afraid to fish a long seam 15 feet off the bank.

If you haven’t been out this summer yet, get out, dries in the am are hard to beat.

Sorry for the long delay in reports. The flows for this time of year are great with more water in the Yakima than they were predicting earlier this season.

With summer stones and hoppers in full effect on the Yakima we have seen some great fishing, especially before and around the sunrise. Remember that summer stones are nocturnal so fishing earlier is your best bet for success while avoiding the heat of the day. Typically, hoppers are best after the sun comes out, however, there are so many (switch hitters) meaning flies that could be a Stoneflopper, imitating both that could work in all situations. With the cooler weather this week, the water temps are still in the mid 60’s, but please be aware of water temps rising around 70. If your off the water by 1030 to noon, it shouldn’t be an issue.

The Dry fly fishing has been decent during low light hours and a little tough during the middle of the day. When the sun is high in the sky make sure your drifts are tight to the banks. Nymphing during the middle of the day has also been ok. Remember that the water temperature is getting warm and the fish need more oxygen. Look for the faster white water, that is where the fish are going to be holding. The fish are feeding higher in the water column so you don’t have to have your flies on the river bottom. Also, the water temps are up so please release the trout quickly. There is nothing wrong with the 8 sec rules and LDR’s (long distance release’s) this time of year. With this warm weather make sure you are drinking lots of water through out the day.

With the weather warming up into the high 90’s and the low river flows, fishing is best early mornings and late afternoon when the river will be at its coolest. Flows have been below normal for this time of the year so make sure to take care of the fish. With the hot weather they’ll be in the coolest, most highly oxygenated areas on the river. We received a lot of rain in the mountains over the weekend that has increase the Yakima river flows about 1000cfs above the Teanaway and about about 1500 cfs at Umtanum. The water clarity is a little off color. The river is already starting to drop and clearing quickly. If your plan on coming over in the next few days make sure you have a few San Juan worms in your box.

Mild and sunny weather continues to dominate on the East side of the Cascades. Daytime temperatures will be in the fifties today around Ellensburg. The good weather has brought the adult skwala stoneflies out early this year. Amazing that it is February and we have been able to catch fish on the surface with skwala dries this past week. Using stonefly nymphs with a worm or beadhead dropper tends to be productive in the morning hours while an adult skwala dry can pick up fish later in the afternoon.

Its has been pretty darn good fishing for January. Remember you’re fishing in the winter, you’re going to have shorter windows of good fishing. Noon to 3 has been pretty consistent in the upper and the lower Yakima river.

The fish are keyed in on the stone fly nymph. A size 8 pat stone in Black/Brown and the Olive/Brown have been getting it done, find the right depth and water speed.
