Rivers: Yakima River

The Yakima river is in great shape. The trout have been very zone specific. Look for that walking speed water, that the depth is three to four feet. When you are nymphing you don’t need to much weight, you want your flies floating natural with the water current. Pay close attention to the slight movements of the indicator. Yarn indicators are a great option to help see the subtle strikes. The prime window for fishing right now is from 1pm to 3pm. Make sure you dress warm, getting cold this time of year can ruin your day.

A couple keys for successful Nymphing in the winter on the Yakima.

  • Dress warm
  • Concentrate your efforts from noon to 4pm
  • Fish the slower moving water
  • Use a yarn indicator v.s a thingamabobber
  • Very your Nymphing depth from 2 to 4 feet.
  • Fish size 18 and smaller flies with a little split shot or behind a weighted stone fly.
  • Flies: Brassies, WD 40’s, Zedra Midges, unweighted Pheasant Tails and Chironomids. These are a few of our go to bugs in the winter.
  • Use 5x or 6x mono to your small flies.
  • Pick a part all of the seams. Start close in the shallow water and then move out.
  • Get long drag free drifts
  • Make sure that your fly line is floating. If your line is dirty clean it and put floatant on it. It will help you with your hook sets and mending.
  • Keep a couple hand warmers in your pocket.
  • Have a small towel to dry your hands when they get wet.
  • Have Some Fun!

The Yakima river is dropping quickly from the last rain system that we received last week. The entire Yakima is in shape right now, but the weather is very cold. We are suppose to see some warmer weather by Thursday. This weekend is shaping up for a good weekend to get out and do some trout fishing.

We are receiving some rain in the Kittitas Valley today, the entire Yakima is on a little rise.  The last few days, the fishing has been good. They have been very zone specific. The Klickitat continues to be fishing good. There are only a few days left of the season. The Klickitat will probably see a little rise in flows also, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that it stays in shape for the last few days.

Time to brake out the puffy coats, gloves and long underwear. Winter has arrived in Central & Eastern Washington. The fishing on the Yakima has slowed down, we are still picking up a few fishing nymphing in the middle of the day.

The Klickitat River is in great shape with some new snow on the ground.

The Grand Ronde has flowing ice and is getting worse each day. The good thing is the fishing is still good, just cold.

October 30

Rivers: Yakima and Klickitat River.

The last few days on the Yakima River has been fun fall fishing. The fish have been keyed in on the small nymph game right now (size 18 and 20′s). It’s a good idea to run a yarn indicators, they detect the small movement on the flies better than thingamabobbers. I know its not fun casting yarn indicators but your hook up ratio will improve. For the dry fly anglers, we have been seeing some nice trout working in selective spots. They have been giving us a good challenge.

Winter Rate for the Yakima River start this Saturday Nov. 1, $325 1 or 2 anglers. Includes flies, hot lunch, professional experienced guide. Never fly fished, always wanted to try? Take advantage of our Winter Rate to learn how to fly fish! You don’t have Waders/Boots or Rod/Reels no problem, we have you covered! We supply it all to make sure you have a fun, educational, successful day on the river.

The Klickitat has been in and out shape this last week. It is currently out of shape right now. We are hoping it will be fishable again this Sunday. If you haven’t had a chance to get out steelhead fishing this fall there is still time. We have openings and would enjoy to show you a great day of steelhead fishing.

October 23

Portions of eastern Washington have received significant rain over night that caused the Klickitat river go out but is already on the drop. The Yakima river saw a small but unremarkable increase in flows from the Teanaway. Fishing should be uneffected and the flows have stayed low and clear, particularly above the Teanaway.

Fishing on the Yakima in the Ellensburg and Cle Elum sections have been most consistent for Blue Wing Olives.  Nymphing with a size 16 to 18 beadhead of your choice typically is productive in the morning to early afternoon. The BWO’s appear about 2 PM to 5 PM. We’ve been changing to size 16 and 18 parachute Adams, or other BWO dry, about this time of day, reguardless of seeing rising fish.  The October caddis continue to be seen towards the end of daylight.

With the excellent fall fishing for both trout and steelhead, there’s no reason not to go fishing.

Anyone intrested in fishing the Grande Ronde river, Jim Gallagher has the weekend of November 8 and 9 available. Two nights lodging and two days of fishing is $1500 for one or two anglers.

Rivers: Yakima, Klickitat, Wenatchee, Methow Rivers

The Yakima River continues to fish very well with the window of opportunity being from 11 to 3pm. The last few days we have been finding fish eating  BWO’s on the surface. The flies to have in your fly box this time of year are Size 18, 20 Copper and Red Brassies, Size 18, 20, WD 50′s and some Non Beaded Pheasant Tails size 18 and size 20′s.

The Klickitat River has been producing  Steelhead every day. We lost color yesterday but it’s back on the drop and should be fishable again tomorrow.

The Methow and Wenatchee Rivers have also been producing Steelhead each day with a little less fishing pressure than normal. Don’t be afraid to swing the fly.

The fishing continues to be good with the little bugs under an indicator on the Yakima river. This time of the year switch your thingamabobbers out for the more sensitive poly indicators and you will see all the strikes. Flies to have in your fly box this time of year are Size 18, 20 Copper and Red Brassies, Size 18, 20, WD 50′s and some Non Beaded Pheasant Tails size 18 and size 20′s. Focus your fishing to the walking speed water that is 2ft to 4ft deep, between 11am to 3pm.

With the Methow and Wenatchee rivers opening up for steelhead this last week, along with the Klickitat  and Grande Ronde rivers. There are lots of good choices for chasing steelhead here in eastern Washington right now. We have been nymphing and swinging. Don’t be afraid to swing the fly throughout the day. When you are fishing for steelhead, look for that walking speed water. Some time its a piece of water that is long and obvious and other time its just a small piece of water among a lot of fast water. Steelhead make you work and read the water. Steelhead fishing will make you a better trout fisherman!

It’s here. The excellent fall weather with warm days and cool nights. The stage is set for great fishing and a multitude of different insects. It’s go time. Get out and fish.

Sorry for such a long delay in the fishing reports. The Yakima is low and clear. We have been spending most of our time from the Farmlands to the Upper River. The fishing has been a little mixed bag. When fishing dries, fish the heaver seams and don’t be afraid to twitch the fly a little. When you are nymphing, fish small patterns. If you haven’t been out fishing this Fall, get out. The weather has been outstanding, lets hope this warm weather continues.

It’s  also that time of year we start chasing Steelhead. If you have wanted to catch a Steelhead or learn how to throw a Spey rod, come spend a day with us Steelhead fishing. The Klickitat is in great shape and there are fish!

Top flies to have in your box for the weekend!

The fishing continues to be good throughout the Yakima river. We are still seeing Summer Stones, October Caddis, Crane Flies, and we are starting to see more and more BWO’s consistently come off mid afternoon. Each day we have been 50/50 between throwing dries and nymphing. The fish are still holding in summertime water. Be patient and work water. It is always a great time to come and fish the Yakima. Right now the wade fishing opportunities are endless on the Yakima. If you plan on floating make sure to check and see if there are new hazards on the stretch you are planning to float. We are here to help.

The small nymph game has been the ticket the last few days. It’s hard to tie on size 18 flies, when all summer you have been throwing big bugs. It’s that time of year.

Fall is in the air, the Yakima River is getting lower and lower each day. The big dry fly game has slowed a little but the shallow nymph game still is on. We are still seeing Summer Stones and Hoppers. New to the game are Ocober Caddis, Crane flies and we just started seeing a few BWO’s today on the river. This time of year you will want to be fishing the river within the river (main channel). In the next few weeks start transitioning back to the small bug game; until then enjoy fishing the bigger bugs.

July 31

Yakima River

The weather has been outstanding and it looks like there’s a lot more great weather on the way. Sadly, we only have a month of high water fishing left for the season. Fishing the Yakima River this time of year is beyond fun! You get to cover a ton of water and throw big dries tight to the banks. The Flip Flop will start at the end of August, beginning of September and flows will drop for the Fall.

The entire river is fishing good, anytime you can get out and any hopper/stonefly in your box will do. The lower canyon is fishing better in low light conditions and the upper river is fishing better during mid day (not saying the low light periods of the day are bad, just not as good.) There is definitely something for everyone right now. There’s no time like the present to enjoy a little sun and fishing!

Summertime fishing continues on the Yakima and we have been spending time throughout the entire river. The Dry fly fishing has been great during low light hours and okay during the middle of the day. When the sun is high in the sky make sure your drifts are tight to the banks. Nymphing during the middle of the day has also been good. Remember that the water temperature is getting warm and the fish need more oxygen. Look for the faster white water, that is where the fish are going to be holding. The fish are feeding higher in the water column so you don’t have to have your flies on the river bottom. Also, the water temps are up so please release the trout quickly. There is nothing wrong with the 8 sec rules and LDR’s (long distance release’s) this time of year.

Concentrate your efforts during the low light hours of the day fishing big bushy dry flies. During the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky  fishing dries can be a little tougher.  If you still want to fish dries, cast at the heavier banks.  You could also try nymphing the color changes and more oxygenated water during this hot part of the day.

Hatches: Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Caddis, Summer Stones

We can’t believe its July already, we are getting some nice July weather over here. Fishing the past couple of days has turned back into, well fishing? Meaning some runs have been putting out fish and not others. Some sections of the river have been fishing better than others. But that’s fishing. Dry’s and Nymph’s have both produced fish equally over the past few days.

One key to success is that the fish are moving into summer water. (well oxygenated water)

Hatches: Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Caddis, Summer Stones

The Yakima and  Teanaway Rivers are in great shape. Flows are bumping up a little to normal summer time levels and everything is fishing. Trout have moved into summer time water and we are having very nice weather. Start looking for the well oxygenated hiding spots. Shallow riffles, boulders, off gravel bars and faster moving water. Remember there is a lot of different types of aquatic insects coming off. If you’re not catching fish on one pattern, switch it up, everyday is different. Don’t be afraid to throw dries even if you are not seeing fish feeding on the surface. The trout are looking up for food. When you are nymphing, shallow up your depths to 2-4 feet.

Hope this doesn’t jinx the fishing, but we are pretty confident the dry fly fishing is on right now throughout the entire Yakima river. We are in the magic time between the end of snow melt flows and before the summer irrigation increases. The Yakima is perfect for fishing with great water clarity and many different types of hatching insects. These includes Drakes, Caddis, Golden stones, Yellow Sallies, PMD’s, Crane flies and a bunch of other bugs. Over the next week, the weather temperatures in the low 70’s and not too much W.

Blustery conditions are forecasted for the Weekend. The Yakima river conditions, however, are excellent. The reservoirs are full and the flows have been consistent with great water clarity. Mornings have tended to fish a little better that the afternoon and the evening hours. We’ve been seeing a variety of different insects. These include Drakes, Caddis, Golden stones, Pale morning Duns, Yellow Sallies, and a few Crane flies. Expect success with streamers fished slowly. Olive or natural colored sculpin patters have produced.

June 10

Yakima River

It’s a great time of year to fish the Yakima river.

There is a cornucopia of bugs hatching on any given day and you should expect the unexpected.  Lots of Caddis in the lower canyon of the Yakima River. On the upper river, we are seeing Caddis, Yellow Sallies, Golden stones, Pale morning duns, Drakes, Ants, and even an odd-ball March brown dun. The water levels below the confluence of the Yakima and Cle Elum rivers is up somewhat but has great clarity. The reservoirs are 100 percent so the outflow of water is matching the inflow.  Given this, the Yakima is still fairly wade-fishing friendly at most locations.

The small streams are all open now with mostly fishable water levels. The Teanaway is a good bet for the next few weeks. It’s slightly high but at a reasonable level to fish with a dry fly.

The weather is forecasted to be in the 70’s with sunny skies most days. Truly a great time to fish before the summer irrigation flows arrive later in the month.

The Cle Elum dam has starting releasing water for the summer. The river has a little color  do to the increase in flows the last few days but it is still fishable. The flows have started to stabilize and should be in great shape by the weekend. There has been a lot of aquatic insects coming off, Golden Stones, PMD’s, Yellow Sallies and Caddis.

The Creeks open this weekend June 7.

The fishing on the Yakima is starting to improve and so is the weather. The 10 day forecast looks great. The flows should stay consistent for at least the next few days. Bugs of choice are Caddis, PMD’s and Golden stones. A good weekend to get out!

The last few days has been on the tougher side. On the positive side there has been fish rising through out the day. The main aquatic bugs have been Caddis, PMD’s and Golden Stones. Shallow nymphing has been the most productive method during the day.

The warm weather we have had the last few days is causing the river to increase due to the  all of the creeks below the reservoirs draining the mountain snow melt and the reservoirs releasing water. Looks like it will be a tough weekend to be fishing. We will keep you updated as condition change.

The forecast for this week looks great. We will see the Mothers Day Caddis really get rolling. There is a lot of bug activity going on (Caddis, Salmon Flies, Golden Stones, PMD’s) and the river is currently in great shape. We should see the flows bump up this week with the great weather we are experiencing! Cross your fingers that the river rises gradually and remains fishable.

The entire river from Wilson creek upstream is in great shape and fishing good. From Wilson creek down the river is ok, the fishing just hasn’t been that great. look for the next few days for that to improve. The river has been experiencing March Browns, BWO’s, Caddis, a few PMD’s and Salmon flies (upper river). The upper river has been seeing a lot of caddis, we haven’t seen much caddis yet in the lower river but with the weather forecast I would expect to see a lot of caddis in the lower river next week.

The Upper Yakima River held on this weekend and is still in good shape. The Teanaway is on the drop and the lower river should be coming back into shape in the next few days if the weather cooperates.  We are still seeing March Browns coming off around 1:30pm. The Caddis are starting to play a role in the fishes diet. Lets keep our fingers crossed we might actually have a fishable river when the Mothers day Caddis really gets going.

Thank you for all the people that stopped by our booth and attended the Yakima River presentation at the FFF show this weekend

The Yakima River below the Teanaway River is looking pretty dirty. The Upper Yakima is still holding on and looking good. The last few days in the upper have been good dry fly fishing. Hint, make sure you have a black fly in the size 10 to 12 range.

Also the FFF Washington Fly Fishing Fair is today and Sunday at the Ellensburg Fair grounds.

The March Brown’s and the BWO’s having been coming off consistently all week around 1:30pm, but finding fish feeding on top this past week has been inconsistent. The nymphing through out the day has been the ticket for catching. We are going to see the weather warm up  later in the week with warm night time lows, causing some of the higher elevation snow to start melting. Keep an eye on the river flows for this weekend, probably going to see another push of water. We will keep you posted.

The entire river is fishing! Still springtime though, everyday is different. One day the trout are eating skwala stoneflies and the next day its great dry fly fishing with March Browns. We have been starting off the day nymphing, while having dry fly rods ready for the March Brown hatch from 1pm to 3pm.  We are still seeing a few Skwala’s moving around and fish eating them. The Mothers Day Caddis hatch is just around the corner. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the river stays in shape for us to fish it this May.

The upper Yakima has stabilized and cleared. The lower river is still dirty, might be a few days before it’s fishable. The best bet for fishing the next few days will be in the upper Yakima. We are seeing Skwalla stones, March Browns and Blue Wing Olives coming off. Don’t forget about the San Juan Worm.

The Lower Yakima River is on rise due to snow melt around the low lying hills. The Upper river is still in great shape. The fishing today was on the tougher side. There are March Browns, BWO’s and Skwalla’s coming off daily in the upper around 1:30 each day. The weather is suppose to cool down the next few days. Which will help slow the melt a little. Make sure to have a few San Juan worms in your box the next few days.

The last few days has been great fishing on the Nymph in the mornings, and good fishing on Skwalla dries in the afternoon. This am we are receiving some rain. We might see some good BWO and March Brown hatches in the next few days with this overcast. They are predicting the Yakima to bump up a little today. Keep an eye on the River Flows. We’re catching a few on the dry fly in the afternoons. Don’t get discouraged everyday is a new day, the spring fishing often turns around quickly.

Upper River Cutthroat Trout

Yakima River

The Upper Yakima above the Teanaway is in shape. The fishing has been tough in the upper river. It is getting better each day. Today the lower river still is not in great shape. The key to success is working water and spending time where you know some fish live. There are some adult Bwo’s and Skwala’s moving around during the middle part of the day. Don’t count out some dry fly fishing. The weather forecast looks good for the week. So everything should continue to improve.

Sorry for the long delay in Fishing Reports.

Yakima River

The river conditions on the Yakima are slowly improving. Having digested most of the snow melt and rain from last week, the river flows have stabilized and are receding. The Yakima below the Teanaway confluence is a split pea soup color with significant flow.  The upper river has much better clarity, more of a steelhead green tint, and manageable flows for fishing.

The weather forecast looks great for the next seven days. Warm temperatures in the afternoon with freezing overnight should keep the flows improving. Expect the Skwala stonefly to be in full emergence.

The Troutwater Guide Service has winter rates of $325 for a full day on the Yakima River. We also have our Introduction to Fly Fishing class this Saturday at the Cle Elum shop. Call for more details or to reserve your spot.

The Yakima continues to be in great shape. We have seen some mixed fishing from this last week. The most consistent fishing has been from the farmlands down this past week. The Skwala’s are defiantly are on the move. Nymphing a sz. 10, 12 brown, olive Stone flies has been the flies of choice. Adult Skwala fishing is just around the corner. March is a great month to see some big fish and some good dry fly fishing. Just be ready to experience all sorts of weather in a day of fishing. 🙂

The fishing this past week has been up and down and so has the weather. When you are experiencing a tough day, go back to the meat and potatoes and continue to have fun. The tough days are good to have because they make you realize that you can always learn more. It’s still winter in the Valley, dress warm.  The top flies for us have been sz, 10,12 Tan Stone flies with a sz 18,20 Brassi, Non beaded Pheasant Tail or a Black Copper John.  Fishing the long flat glides has been the most consistent water.

The river is in great shape. The fishing has been a little up and down this last week. Sz 10 and 12  tan Pat stones and Size 18, 20 little copper johns have been our better patterns. Fishing in walking speed water at about 3 to 4 feet depth. The water is low and clear, remember that the fish are a little more spooky with these water conditions on the Yakima.
