Larry P. With his first steelhead

Small bug game on the Yakima! The fishing continues to be good with the little bugs under an indicator. This time of the year switch your thingamabobbers out for the more sensitive poly indicators and you will see all the strikes. Flies to have in your fly box this time of year are Size 18, 20 Copper and Red Brassies, Size 18, 20, WD 50’s and some Non Beaded Pheasant Tails size 18 and size 20’s. Focus your fishing to the walking speed water that is 2ft to 4ft deep, between 11am to 3pm.

Klickitat River

The Klickitat had a little push of water last week that brought in some new fish. The catching has gotten even better. We are catching steelhead on the Nymph and and the Swing. The Klickitat Closes November 30th there is still time to catch some fish.

Methow River

The Methow has been fishing very well, despite negative reports out there. It’s also been a Swinging and Nymphing game pick your method and have some fun. This time of year on the Methow can be very productive swinging the fly. We are not sure how long this season will stay open, they are assessing the river weekly.

(Its a total cope out for a “guide” to say “Oh, fishing is slow because we’re just swinging”. We have been swinging flies and catching fish daily. We know many other guides doing the same thing. If your guide uses this excuse or reports slow fishing because they cant get it done, GET A NEW GUIDE!)

10-14-2013

Yakima River, Klickitat River, Methow River

The entire Yakima is low, clear, and fishing well. It is very accessible in many locations for wade fishing. On our guide trips, we have seen predominately October caddis, a variety of mayflies, and small tan to brown colored caddis. Nymphing in the morning with a drag free drift technique using a stone fly and a mayfly nymph dropper has been most consistent. Once the temperature raises in the afternoon, dry fly possibilities exist. A good dry fly set-up has been the tandem of an October caddis with a blue wing olive dry trailer. Make sure to provide a little “jiggle” to the drift with this set-up. The area weather forecast is nothing but sunshine for this upcoming week. Should be a good week to fish.

On the steelhead side of fishing, the Klickitat has taken the spotlight with several hot steelies caught on our guide trips each day. The Klick also has a strong Chinook run and anglers on our trips have bumped into these freight trains while steelhead fishing.

Also the Methow River will be opening for Steelhead on Oct. 16. Click here for Details.

Over the last few days we have seen an increase in flows caused by lots of rain in the valley. It has slowed the dry fly fishing a little. The river is still in shape  with a little tint of color, the river will drop back down and clear out quickly.  The forecast looks great the rest of the week. Get out the BWO box, it’s that time of year. Fish are moving back into that walking speed water. The best time to be on the water is from 10 to 4. As the weather continues to get colder, that productive windows will be getting shorter.

Yakima River

The fishing continues to be good throughout the Yakima river. We are still seeing a few Summer Stones, October Caddis, Crane Flies, and we are starting to see more and more BWO’s consistently come off mid afternoon. Each day we have been 50/50 between throwing dries and nymphing. The fish are still holding in summertime water, but they are starting to move into the transition water. Be patient and work water. It is always a great time to come and fish the Yakima. Right now the wade fishing opportunities are endless on the Yakima. If you plan on floating make sure to check and see if there are new hazards on the stretch you are planning to float. We are here to help.

It’s  also that time of year we start chasing Steelhead. If you have wanted to catch a Steelhead or learn how to throw a Spey rod, come spend a day with us Steelhead fishing. We have some of the best Trout and Steelhead guides in the state! Meet our Guides

Yakima River

The Yakima River is at it’s fall flow (low and clear). The weather continues to consist of outstanding cool mornings and warm days. The sun has made the dry fly fishing a little tougher during the middle part of the day. The nymphing continues to be good throughout the day. This time of year you will want to be fishing the river within the river (main channel). We are seeing Summer Stones, October Caddis, Hoppers, Crane flies and a few BWO’s. In the next few weeks start transitioning back to the small bug game; until then enjoy fishing the big bugs.

Steelhead fishing is upon us! We are currently booking the Klickitat and Grande Ronde rivers. We are not sure if  the Methow will open for Steelhead this year, lets keep our fingers crossed. We will keep you posted.

Having fun in the Upper Yakima!

The flip flop has begun, the Yakima river is on the drop. The dry fly fishing continues to be good to great depending on the day. With the water on the drop remember that you don’t need to be fishing tight to the bank, follow the main current seams. We are still fishing big dry flies remember if the drag free drift is not bringing some fish up, try twitching the fly a little. It has been an outstanding summer, we  expecting to have a great fall. With the water dropping the Farmlands are going to be getting tight, feel free to give us a call before you float.

Yakima River

Sorry for yet another long delay of fishing reports. Summertime fishing continues on the Yakima and we have been spending time throughout the entire river. The Dry fly fishing has been great during low light hours and okay during the middle of the day. When the sun is high in the sky make sure your drifts are tight to the banks. Nymphing during the middle of the day has also been good. Remember that the water temperature is getting warm and the fish need more oxygen. Look for the faster white water, that is where the fish are going to be holding. The fish are feeding higher in the water column so you don’t have to have your flies on the river bottom. Also, the water temps are up so please release the trout quickly. There is nothing wrong with the 8 sec rules and LDR’s (long distance release’s) this time of year. We only have a couple more weeks of high water fishing. If you enjoy fishing Dries tight to the bank, get out here soon.

The past few day the fishing has slowed a little, but overall the fishing continues to be productive.  We are having to nymph a little more than we would like during the day. Big trout on the Yakima

It’s summer time on the Yakima. The Bureau of Reclamation has bumped up the flows, we are now at normal summertime flows. The fishing remains good. The upper Yakima river is fishing pretty consistent with dry flies all day.  There are some days where we have had to nymph a little. The lower canyon is also fishing good with nymphing during the day and waiting until evening to fish dries. The “rubber hatch” has began on the Yakima, so be prepared for slight distractions in the lower canyon. We are still seeing a few golden stones in the upper river. PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, and Caddis have been the main stay. Hopers and summer stones are just around the corner. Shorts, Sandals and Dry flies, it’s a great time of year to be trout fishing.

A very special day for Alex and Gena.

Yakima River

The river flows have been fluctuating a little the last few days which has made the fishing a little more challenging. We are in summer time flows, remember if you are fishing from the boat you are going to need to slow the boat down to get the right drifts. If you are fishing from the bank start fishing in the shallow faster water, work your way out from the bank slowly. Can’t beat fishing in shorts and sandals!

Payton having fun on the Yakima

We spent most of our time in the Upper Yakima River over Memorial weekend. The Yakima River is in great shape, the fishing has been a little up and down due to battling some adverse weather conditions over the weekend. We are still seeing March Browns,

PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, and some caddis on the warmer days. We are also starting to see a few Green Drakes. We are crossing our fingers that the weather forecast improves.  The high water season is here we won’t be seeing the Yakima in low flows constantly until September again. Remember to be safe when floating in the summer time flows things happen fast.

This weekend (June 1st) all the rest of the river open up. There is going to be a lot of choices on where to fish. Always check regulations before you go out and fish.

Here is a few pics of some great kids that we fished with over Memorial weekend.

Yakima River

We have received some rain the last few days which has put the river back on a little rise.  Is the river going to stay in shape? That is hard to say, keep your eyes on the flows. Our guess is that the upper river will stay in shape and the lower Yakima will be questionable. The fishing the last few days has been just OK, not much dry fly opportunity. The most consistent fishing has been nymphing. The bug of choice has been Caddis and PMD nymphs. On a good note the weather looks like it will be improving by this weekend. We will keep you posted

Yakima River

Over the the weekend the Yakima River has started it’s big runoff. We have received some very welcomed warm weather. The great weather will continue throughout  this week which is great. It will allow a lot of the snow up high to come down. Cross our fingers that this is the only big blow out of the year. As the water was starting to come up we where seeing  a lot of Caddis, Salmon flies, A few PMD’s and some Yellow Sallies. As soon as the river comes back into shape I would say that the fishing will be on. When is the Yakima River going to back into shape? That is hard to say, We are hopeful by the end of the week the upper river will be fishable. Only time will tell. We will keep you posted.

Guide: Ryan “Whitey” White

The weather is finally warm, I think we can officially say no more snow. However, the snow will start to melt and put the river in poor shape.  Proof, life can never be perfect.  The river menu is getting more complex, the caddis are starting to show themselves, stonefly options are getting more diverse.  Mayflies are always on the menu, plus a few sneaky terrestrials to throw a monkey wrench in the best laid plans.  Here’s a rundown: Salmonflies, Goldenstones, yellow sallies, PMD’s, Drakes, caddis, carpenter ants, etc. Keep a eye on flows and cross your fingers.

Yakima Fishing Report

Randy Crimp

It was a tough week of fishing on the Yakima, but there were still some great fish caught and good times to be had. The fishing was primarily a nymphing game with a little dry fly fishing sprinkled in. Stones and San Juan worms in various colors and sizes fished the best with some smaller bugs working before the water colored up. We landed a beautiful Yakima Steelhead on thursday. Chuck did a great job fighting the fish, took a spill mid fight and got totally soaked, then finished the fight with a steelhead to the net! The best part is his 16 year old son filmed the whole thing.

Yesterday, Liam landed this monster Rainbow while logging hours for his Senior project on fly fishing….good choice of a subject. The river had about 2-2.5 ft. of visibility and looked great. Water clarity should only get better with all of the flows on the drop.

We do a great variety of trips, ranging from beginner to expert. Give us a call to arrange a trip that is tailored to your needs for a great day on the river.

Jim with a Permit in the Yucatan

Why is my margarita glass empty again? Oh, I forgot, 13 permits chased my crab today with no eats. We are in the middle of our first week of clients fishing the flats of the Yucatan. It’s hard to beat the eighty degree weather and nothing but sunshine. We’ve had a ton of bonefish, a few tarpon, one big barracuda, three permit and a snook to the boat. Our clients, Gary, Chris and Brandon (Hill’s Discount Flies) have been having a great time and they have two more days before heading home. Johnny Boitano and I will have another group arriving for six more days of fishing the flats of the Yucatan. Can’t wait!

Yakima River

From the Teanaway down stream the Yakima river is dirty, above the Teanaway the river is still in great shape. It’s hard to say when the lower river is going to be back in shape. The fishing in the upper river has been good the last few days, we are seeing Skwala’s, BWO and a few March browns on the water.  The BWO’s and March Browns have been starting to pop around 1:30pm. Spend some time working the the water and be patent looking for fish rising. Enjoy the the day!

We’ve had an outstanding weekend from great fishing to some of the best spring weather that we can remember on Easter weekend. On a bad note the river is starting to rise quickly from snow melt. We are taking each day as it comes and hoping for the best.

The dry fly fishing has picked up and has been consistent the last few days in the farmlands and the lower canyon. The dry fly fishing in the upper Yakima is still zone specific and spotty. The water clarity above the Teanaway cleared up yesterday and is in good condition. The fishing and weather was tough we had  snow, rain and a little sun through out the day.   We nymphed all day and hooked a few fish on size 18 CDC pheasant tails, size 8 tan Pat stone, and a couple on a san juan worm. We did see a small BWO hatch with a couple March browns mixed in around 1:30pm. Today the water below the Teanaway looks a lot better, and so does the weather. It’s March, everyday is a new day!

Yakima River

Over the weekend we had a mixed bag of fishing reports from our guides. The zone that had the best fishing was in the lower Yakima Canyon, with great dry fly fishing for most of the day. In the upper river and the farmlands you had to work a little harder for the fish with a nymph set up. We have another great forecast ahead this week. The concern this week is the weather may be to nice, night time temperatures are not going to be as cold. If this happens we will probably see the Yakima rise a little, keep an eye on the graphs. The good thing is we will continue to see more great dry fly fishing.

It’s spring!  You never know what the weather is going to be each day, we went from a 60 degree high a few days ago to having a light dusting of snow this morning. The spring dry fly fishing is going to be the same, some days you will have decent fishing on dries and other days you will have to work for them. The Nymphing and streamer game will be more consistent. The exciting reward will be to catch some great fish. Be prepared for all weather conditions and have fun however you like to fish.

Gena and her first Rainbow of 2013 and it was on a Dry!

Yakima River

The last few days the lower Yakima has been fishing better than the upper Yakima river. If you are wanting to throw dries, focus your efforts in the slow moving water and be patient. Nymphing has been consistent through out the day. The water came up a little and we  got nervous because we are so use to having the river go out from the last three springs. It was just a little bump and is fishable. This spring is shaping up good.

The Yakima continues to be fishing good. We are consistently getting fish up on dry flies in the afternoons. Mornings we are having to nymph and work the water. We have seen a little increase in flows over the last day which hasn’t affected the fishing or water clarity. The weather forecast looks great for the next few days. Looks like a a great weekend to fish the Yakima.

Mild and sunny weather continues to dominate on the East side of the Cascades. Daytime temperatures will be in the fifties today around Ellensburg. The good weather has brought the adult skwala stoneflies out early this year. Amazing that it is February and we have been able to catch fish on the surface with skwala dries this past week. Using stonefly nymphs with a worm or beadhead dropper tends to be productive in the morning hours while an adult skwala dry can pick up fish later in the afternoon. Black or olive colored streamers can be productive the entire day.

Water conditions are low and clear throughout the system. The water temperature is definitely warmer in the Ellensburg area versus the upper river around Cle Elum. Regardless of the river section you want to fish, you should have a good day with these conditions and fish activity.

Over the last few days the weather has continued to be great. However, the downside is that fishing has been tough. It’s hard to say why the fishing has slowed, although it still has been enjoyable fishing in this great weather.  When you are experiencing a tough day, go back to the meat and potatoes and continue to have fun. The tough days are good to have because they make you realize that you can always learn more.

Most of the boat launches in the upper river are snow free now except Bullfrog and Ensign.

Ellensburg was a bit breezy today and it was a nice surprise to find some great weather in the Lower Yakima River Canyon. We had some beautiful sunshine for most of the day and some great fishing. Nymphing a standard size 8 tan/brown stone with a pheasant tail below it consistently produced through out the day with things slowing down around 3pm. Hook ups were about 50/50 for the top and bottom bug. We landed some nice rainbows, fat white fish, and lost a few more. We also had the great surprise of fighting and landing a beautiful Yakima Steelhead, something to to always be stoked about!

We didn’t see many Skwalas adults but that game shouldn’t be to far out with this nice weather. Call the shops or come see us at the Lynnwood Fly Fishing Show Febuary 16-17 for more information about getting out on the water.

1-10-2013Calling some Ducks

This past week Ted and Johnny took some time off from chasing trout and spent some time chasing waterfowl! Helping our friend Ryan Fortier film his TV show Duck Dog Waterfowl. It has been a ton of fun filming and taking photos. We got to see some great waterfowl hunting in Central Washington state.

The Yakima continues to produce some nice winter time fishing. The weather has warmed up a bit the last few days, which has made the days more enjoyable. The same type of flies have been working : WD 40’s, Non beaded Pheasant Tails, Red and Copper Brassies in sizes 16 through 22 and don’t forget about Pat Stones.  This is a great time of year to get out for a few hours and have the river all to yourself.

The snow pack at Snoqualmie Pass is at 123% normal. Looks like we will have plenty of water for 2013. Lets hope that it stays around that number and warms up gradually. We love the spring time fishing, it’s just around the corner. Keep your fingers crossed for a normal spring this year!
